Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo
As with any product you use on a project, you want to have confidence in the quality, durability and consistency of the bamboo flooring you select. Not all bamboo floors are equal. Some bamboo flooring lasts longer. Some install more easily. Some can be easily re-coated. Some emit VOCs like formaldehyde at much lower levels. It all depends upon how it is manufactured.

Teragren bamboo flooring comes in an abundance of choices in style, color and installation method, as well as information on their specifications and test results. It comes with a lifetime structural warranty and a 25-year residential/5-year commercial finish warranty (except for Spectrum flooring).

Hardness is the main factor in durability. Bamboo flooring can be as soft as pine and harder than maple depending on the species of bamboo used and when it was harvested. Teragren specifies only Optimum 5.5® Moso bamboo harvested at maturity (5-1/2 to 6 years) when fiber density peaks. As a result, Teragren bamboo averages 25 percent harder than red oak and 12 percent harder than North American maple. (Teragren’s Synergy™ strand bamboo with Xcora™ technology is 154 percent harder than oak due to our patented process and optimized manufacturing.)

A full spectrum of coordinating flooring, stair parts and trim, architectural casings, floor vents, panels, veneer, edge banding and butcher block countertops are also available to help you complete your design.

Cork Floors

Cork has been used as a flooring material for more than one hundred years. Cork flooring is durable, provides acoustical and thermal insulation, cushions the foot, is resistant to moisture damage and decay, and is fairly easy to clean. Though imported and thus energy-intensive to ship to North America, cork flooring is still worthy of consideration for use in low environmental impact buildings. Cork is the outer bark of a species of oak tree, Quercus Suber, which grows in the Mediterranean climates. Open, savannah-like cork oak forests cover approximately 2.2 million hectares (5.4 million acres) in seven countries: 30% in Portugal, 21% in Algeria, 20% in Spain, 16% in Morocco, 5% in France, and 4% each in Italy and Tunisia. Available as both glue-down tiles and floating floor planks.

Cork may be the most naturally sustainable and renewable finish material available for home and work environments. Harvested from the peeled outer bark of the cork oak trees of Spain and Portugal, cork is manufactured without waster into durable and decorative surface amerial that offers great variety in appearance.

Cork is not a new finish material -its cultivation is an ancient tradition that has prevailed more than three thousand years because of its care, concern and harmony with nature. The raw cork material is obtained from the bark of the tree in a process called “unmasking”. The tree itself is never cut down and the bark regenerates itself after a few years. 100% of the harvested material is utilized; there is no residue or harmful byproduct going to the landfill. It can’t get more ecologically sound than that.

Cork is uses on floors, walls, ceilings and furniture for quiet, warmth and comfort. It has about 200 million air-entrapped cells per cubic inch that provide outstanding acoustic insulation, with an R value of 3.125. This same density also creates a low level of thermal conductivity, making cork floors comfortable in both hot or cold weather, as well as good controllers of humidity or moisture absorption.

In today’s market, cork is offered in sheets, rolls, tiles, or “floating floor” planks that easily assemble in tongue-and-groove configurations. It is a practical solution for any room that needs a sound barrier; studios, libraries, children’s rooms, or as a warmer more cushioned surface to stand on, as in a kitchen or bath.

So … it is natural and ecological, hygienic and easy to maintain, gives acoustic and thermal insulation, is comfortable to walk on, attractive in its variety of patterns, easy to install, and a very durable and proven building material. Cork appears to be a natural choice.

Recycled Glass Tile

These gorgeous decorative tiles made from 100% recycled landfill glass, are suitable for either field or accent use. With color names like “mineral water”, “cranberry”, and “moss”, these translucent, iridescent tiles are made from post-consumer glass collected both by the bottle and by the ton. They are competitively priced with other handmade art and decorative tile, and are available matte or glossy in a range of sizes and various shapes including squares, triangles, hexagons, stars, diamonds, hearts and more. Recycled glass tiles work best on counter surfaces, tables, walls and decorative projects throughout the home.

Linoleum and Marmoleum Floors

Natural Linoleum is one of the greenest of flooring materials in composition. Its primary ingredients are wood flour & ground up cork. Organic pigments give the material its color, linseed oil binds it together and lime is used as filler. Jute, a natural fiber, is used as a backing to help stabilize the material. It is available in multiple patterns and a wide range of colors. Comes in glue-down sheets or tiles and floating floor planks.

Natural Carpet

Carpet
We offer a number of carpet patterns and colors made from renewable resources such as all natural, biodegradable high-quality wool, cotton, jute, hemp, and even silk. Our carpet contains the lowest possible percentage of chemical treatment at every stage of manufacturing, and is safe for children, infants, and individuals with a high sensitivity to environmental toxins. It also helps to prevent sick building syndrome. The wool carpet naturally repels water-borne stains which allows for easy cleaning. (Livingreen can provide referrals for eco-friendly wool carpet cleaners. For cleaning synthetics, please see our cleaners section).

Palmwood

Palmwood flooring is manufactured from plantation-grown coconut palm trees that are in abundance throughout much of the world. Many palm trees species will produce nuts (including coconuts) for up to 80 years. When they become sterile, they are removed and replaced. The wood can then be harvested for uses that include flooring, paneling, and furniture. As global rainforests continue to be tapped for timber needs, coconut palms provide an innovative and creative alternative to exotic and tropical hardwoods that are more rare or endangered. Palmwood flooring is available in 3/4"x 3″ × 72″ planks, either unfinished or pre-finished with an oil-based low VOC polyurethane. 12” parquet tiles are also available in a cross or 4-square pattern. The lumber can vary greatly in color and density, but only the hard dark grade is sold in our product line. The color range is medium reddish tone to a dark mahogany , and the adhesive is formaldehyde- free no VOC. This flooring can be installed over a sub floor using a glue-down or nail-down installation.

Pebble Tiles

These beautifully hand-crafted stone pebble tiles imported from islands throughout southeast Asia may be used for flooring, showers, backsplashes, and various other interior and exterior applications . The stones are harvested by hand to ensure minimal environmental impact. We have flat stones, round stones, wave tiles and interlocking onyx all on 12″×12″ mesh-backed tiles.

Pre-cast Concrete Paver Tiles

Eco-friendly Paver Tiles are sun-cured and manufactured locally with minimal energy use. Nature is the inspiration for the colors and designs. Durable and long-lasting, they may be used both indoors and outdoors. State-of-the-art production and artisan attention combine to make these tiles beautiful, easy to install and low maintenance. These products have been independently tested and meet or exceed industry standards. The tiles come 9×9”, 9×18”, and 18×18” with 5/8” thickness. Well-known interior designer David Michael has created two styles – the clean-lined Minimalist Series and the more rustic Casa Monterey.

Linoleum: Smart and Affordable

Linoleum is one of the most natural, practical, and cost efficient types of surface material in residential and commercial renovation. Noted for its design quality and durability, natural linoleum is essentially made from the same renewable and natural raw materials that began its manufacture over 120 years ago in Europe.

Many people consider it to be one of the “greenest” flooring products available. The essential ingredients are:

  • linseed oil that naturally off-gasses to create a surface barrier that prevents bacteria from growing
  • cork powder harvested from the outer bark of cork trees grown in Portugal, Spain, India, or other arid climates. The cork is primarily scrap from other manufacturing processes, so it can be considered both renewable and recycled
  • wood powder salvaged from sawdust, again a recycled product
  • organic and non-toxic pigments to give color and pattern
  • limestone as a filler and color agent
  • natural jute fiber in an unrefined form that is used to create a stable sheet backing

When compared to other flooring materials, linoleum’s versatility in design and performance make it a natural choice. Where vinyls may have a five-year life cycle based on replacement demand, natural linoleum can last more than 20 years. Its manufacture process extends the color and pattern throughout the material, so that if it does get cut or nicked the same color shows through from below. Its sophisticated color palattes and patterns are designed to support the overall room design, not detract from it.

The combination of health benefits, natural ingredients, and a long life cycle, make linoleum a smart, beautiful and responsible surface solution.

Reclaimed and Salvaged Wood

Certified & Salvage Lumber
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization pursuing a global initiative which enables consumers to identify timber and wood products from well-managed woodlands, through a system of forest certification and product labeling. FSC was founded in 1993 by a diverse group of environmental and social organizations, progressive timber traders, manufacturers, retailers, indigenous people’s groups, and forestry professionals from around the world in response to concerns about global forest destruction.

Our salvage lumber is collected from both local and international sources and includes wood from a range of species and prior function – old wine barrels, locally felled trees, and from buildings set for demolition. Some material is milled for flooring, some as slabs for counters or furniture. Please call for more specific information on available species, quantities and sizes.

We offer naturally finished and unfinished flooring in a variety of widths from 2 - 10” wide plank. Most of these are available in oak, maple, pine, hickory, teak and exotics.
